Monday is not a good day for us as a class, we are in from 9 till 5 and the majority of that is spent either working on HCI research or in lectures. In terms of our sprint planning we only use 7 days and one of the ones we tend not to use is the Monday.

So, nothing to really report.

A week into the first sprint and our planning gives us till Thursday to finish the tasks in this sprint, tight but I am sure we can make it if we pull together.

We allocated seven working team days for actual development. Monday this week was used for a Sprint Planning Meeting, Monday next week will be eaten by lectures and coursework and next Friday is our Sprint Review.

We have now almost finished our first user story which also sets the ground work for the other two in the sprint. Slow progress but given the fact we have 2 large projects to take care of that need our attention in the lab to complete we have little choice. If we could do more of the HCI outside the lab then that would be great but it is very hard getting people outside of the university day to meet up and to a point is a little unfair as it eats into their personal time.

The stress is starting to creep in.

Today we managed to work in our pairs and actually produced some solid work.

  • Rory and Martin finished their work on the initial object hierarchy design (I helped with a bit of on the spot refactoring)
  • Stacey and I hammered out an XML schema (XSD) and sample XML file to show how to use it.

As discussed in class this week, some initial design work is needed on a user story to think about how classes are going to be structured and how things are going to connect to one another.

The schema is a major part of the project as in later stages it will be used to validate the data structure of saved dives as well as showing the other members of the team how the data is layed out.

Today underlined the problem with having too many group projects running concurrently. We needed to use most of our available time this afternoon to work on our HCI coursework which of course meant that we didn’t work in our pairs and didn’t get anything done for this project.

We had a brief scrum meeting but there was nothing to really discuss and so we just agreed to work on things tomorrow.

I was unable to attend today as the flat that belonged to my late grandfather, the flat I spent 4 years in while I studied and cared for him was being emptied prior to the completion of the sale on Friday.

While not a busy or stressful day, it was a hard and emotional one for both myself and my Mother. We were very close to him and it is not until we were removing the items from his flat that we realised just how close we were to closing the door on that part of our lives.

The group understood but from what I hear it did cause a problem since we are so close to the start of the project that until we have the groundwork in place we can’t progress that far. However by using Scrum part of this problem should be reduced as others can take my place as navigator.
